A big threat to health in the Western world is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an umbrella term for a range of liver conditions affecting people who drink little to no alcohol. As the name implies, the main characteristic of NAFLD is too much fat stored in liver cells.
The Mayo Clinic estimates that 1 out of 4 people in Western nations has NAFLD, but I think that the number is much higher than that.
NAFLD is increasingly common around the world, especially in Western nations. In the United States, it is the most common form of chronic liver disease, affecting about one-quarter of the population.
The problem with NAFLD is that it can cause a decrease of oxygenation of the tissues, including brain tissues…
…and also lead to chronic inflammation in the body.
In a study examining the link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and brain dysfunction, scientists at the Roger Williams Institute of Hepatology, affiliated to King’s College London and the University of Lausanne, found an accumulation of fat in the liver causes a decrease in oxygen to the brain and inflammation to brain tissue — both of which have been proven to lead to the onset of severe brain diseases.
A study from King’s College in London gave mice a 10% fat diet or a 55% fat diet.
What they found was that the high fat diet induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and brain dysfunction.
They found that all mice consuming the higher levels of fat were considered obese, and developed NAFLD, insulin resistance and brain dysfunction.
The high fat diet was meant to mimic a Western diet that has lots of processed foods.

The results are scary!
The mice with NAFLD ended up with inflammation in their brain — which is directly linked with the development of dementia.
The study which was funded by the University of Lausanne and Foundation for Liver Research also showed that the brains of mice with NAFLD suffered from lower oxygen levels. This is because the disease affects the number and thickness of the brain blood vessels, which deliver less oxygen to the tissue, but also due to specific cells consuming more oxygen while the brain is becoming inflamed.
One of the biggest challenges is that you can have NAFLD without ever knowing it.
And it can be affecting your brain and your metabolism for years without detection.
“It is very concerning to see the effect that fat accumulation in the liver can have on the brain, especially because it often starts off mild and can exist silently for many years without people knowing they have it,” said lead author Dr Anna Hadjihambi, sub-team lead in the Liver-Brain Axis group at the Roger Williams Institute of Hepatology and honorary lecturer at King’s College London.
The key here is to make sure that you are eating a moderate to low fat diet and not a high fat diet.
A high fat diet will lead to NAFLD which will cause lots of additional health issues.
