Rheumatic disorders are conditions causing chronic, often intermittent pain in the joints or connective tissue.

These diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, scleroderma osteoarthritis and SLE.

Rheumatoid arthritis has a couple of well identified triggers, one of which is low thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism.

(The other trigger is gut bacteria.)

Other rheumatoid disorders have less well-known links to hypothyroidism.

But researchers found that people with psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis were much more likely to have thyroid problems.

Low thyroid leads to increased inflammation and a leaky gut — both of which could increase the risk or rheumatism.

The human research was carried out at the University of Bologna. The paper was published in Clinical Rheumatology.

Rheumatoid arthritis is probably the most well known rheumatic disorder.

The link between low thyroid and rheumatoid arthritis has been known for decades.

“The association between rheumatological and thyroid disorders has long been known, the most common being the association of rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune thyroiditis.”

In this study, researchers were interested to find out whether there was a fundamental link between hypothyroidism and rheumatic disorders.

So they decided to find out if there was a link between low thyroid and a couple of other diseases of the joints and connective tissue.

“Little is known as to possible thyroid involvement in other rheumatological diseases caused by autoimmunity.”

Autoimmune aetiology means that the diseases are believed to be caused by antibodies which attack the specific tissue.

It’s also possible that these are diseases of low metabolism and high inflammation — and that the antibodies are actually attempting to fix the problem…

Common thyroid problems are associated with antibodies too, like those found in Hashimoto’s disease.

The increase in TSH in Hashimoto’s may be the root cause of inflammation and “autoimmune disease.”

The researchers recruited over 200 people for the research.

Over 100 participants had rheumatoid arthritis.

More than 40 and psoriatic arthritis.

The study included 12 men with ankylosing spondylitis.

Finally the researchers included 52 people with no known rheumatic disorder.

“We included 107 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 42 patients with psoriatic arthritis, and 12 male patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Fifty-two normal subjects were used as controls.”

They carried out detailed examinations of the thyroid glands and thyroid markers in all of the participants.

Then the researchers compared the results of the different groups.

When there is a thyroid problem the thyroid gland usually swells up.

This is a result of increased inflammation in the gland.

There was evidence of thyroid swelling in the three groups of people with rheumatoid conditions.

“The average thyroid volume, measured at ultrasounds, was increased in all groups of patients.”

People with rheumatoid diseases were 2 to 3 times more likely to have enlarged thyroid glands.

“The prevalence of thyroid enlargement was 2-3 fold higher in rheumatoid logical disorders in comparison to controls.”

Patients with arthritis had higher levels of T4 — this is the storage form of thyroid hormone.

T4 is really only useful once it is transformed into T3 — the active thyroid hormone.

High levels of T4 might mean that these people are not able to make the real thyroid hormone — keeping metabolism low and inflammation high.

“Both patients with rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis had higher-than-normal T4.”

In psoriatic arthritis, the severity of thyroid problems were in line with the severity of the arthritis symptoms.

“In the psoriatic arthritis group alterations in thyroid volume and function were present irrespective of disease activity.”

There is clearly a strong link between thyroid problems and rheumatoid conditions.

Those with low thyroid hormone (T3) are more likely to have higher inflammation and are at increased risk of leaky gut.

Leaky gut allows bacteria into circulation where it can inflame joints and connective tissue.

You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health-related problems.
