Don’t overlook this – reduces the risk of dementia

Americans (and probably people throughout the rest of the world) are getting less sleep and poorer quality sleep than they used to.
Over the course of five years, adults who reported at least one day a week with difficulty falling asleep increased by 1.43% and those reporting at least one day with trouble staying asleep increased by 2.70%.
I personally think this has a lot to do with the electronics — mostly phones — that we have in our bedrooms at night.

There’s been research on teenagers, phones, and poor quality sleep…
…and I don’t think it’s a big leap to think that adults are affected in similar ways.
“We know from our previous research there is a correlation between smartphone use and insufficient sleep among teens,” Hisler said. “If we’re on our phone before bed or we’re receiving alerts in the middle of the night that can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.”
We’re basically running a huge experiment about interrupted sleep that is being pushed on us by Big Tech.
The problem is that getting less sleep than we should has dramatic long term health consequences — including dementia.
New research finds significant links between three measures of sleep disturbance and the risk for developing dementia over a 10-year period.
The results, reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, published by Elsevier, associate sleep-initiation insomnia…
…which is trouble falling asleep within 30 minutes…
…along with sleep medication use…
…with higher risk for developing dementia.
Adding to the growing body of evidence on sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment, new research finds significant links between three measures of sleep disturbance and the risk for developing dementia over a 10-year period.
I think that one of the most disturbing things about this particular study is that people who take sleep medication to get better sleep ALSO have a higher instance of dementia.
The results, reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, published by Elsevier, associate sleep-initiation insomnia (trouble falling asleep within 30 minutes) and sleep medication use with higher risk for developing dementia.
One of the things that annoys me the most about Big Pharma is how many times a medication that is supposed to FIX a problem can actually cause other problems.
And that’s the case with sleep meds.
I’m not saying to ditch them if your doctor has you on sleep meds.
You need to talk with your doc about that.
What I am saying is that like many medications, sleep meds just treat SYMPTOMS…
They don’t do anything to treat the underlying conditions of not being able to sleep.
So of course Big Pharma wants to sell them to you because they are something you need to take over and over again in order to get the results you want.
I believe there’s a better approach…
Sleep seems to have a goldilocks zone.
Sleeping 7 to 8 hours a night is what’s supported by the research as being optimal for most people.
More or less can cause health problems.
Risk of dementia was double among participants who reported getting less than five hours of sleep compared to those who reported 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
For me, instead of going on meds, what I try to do with my sleep is create an environment — also known as sleep hygiene — that makes getting a good night’s sleep as easy as possible.
There are also different supplements that you can try and I go over these in my Sleep Transformation (find out more below).
The big takeaway here is to realize that if you aren’t getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis, then you will probably end up having problems in your health over time.
It’s worth it to put the time and effort into creating an environment where you sleep well.
