The powers of vitamin B7

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most widespread neurological conditions affecting both young and old worldwide.
It affects nearly 1 million people in the United States.
It can cause weakness, tingling, electric shock sensations, lack of coordination, inability to walk, loss of vision, vertigo, bowel, bladder, and sexual problems.
More than 20 treatments are used to modify the disease or treat symptoms.
Unfortunately, there’s no single treatment, and most MS treatments have major side effects.
In recent years, we have discovered that high doses of vitamin B7 (biotin) can be quite helpful for people with MS – with a very low risk of side effects.

The human research was conducted at Faculté de Médecine de Reims, CHU de Reims, URCA in Reims, France. This paper was published in Multiple Sclerosis.
This was a follow-up to a pilot study that showed pretty exciting benefits of high-dose biotin in people with MS.
“Treatment with MD1003 (high-dose biotin) showed promising results in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in a pilot open-label study.”
(High dose biotin (B7) is now categorized as a drug and called MD1003 in research papers.)
This was a larger, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
“We aim to confirm the efficacy and safety of MD1003 in progressive MS in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.”
The researchers recruited over 150 people who were assessed and scored according to the EDSS.
This quantifies the degree of disability and impairment experienced by people with Multiple Sclerosis.
“Patients with a baseline EDSS score of 4.5-7 and evidence of disease worsening were randomised to 12-month MD1003 (100 mg biotin) or placebo thrice daily.”
After the randomized biotin versus placebo trial, all the participants were given biotin for 12 months.
The researchers were looking for a decrease of one point or more in the EDSS — lower scores are better.
This is an improvement of 10% or more in disability or impairment.
“The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with disability reversal at month 9, confirmed at month 12, defined as an EDSS decrease of ⩾1 point.”
The researchers also looked for a 20% or more increase in walking speed by a standardized test.
“Another primary endpoint was a ⩾20% decrease in timed 25-foot walk time compared with the best baseline among screening or randomisation visits.”
One or both of those effects were achieved in one in eight patients given high-dose biotin.
“12.6% MD1003-treated patients achieved the primary endpoint versus none of the placebo-treated patients.”
The researchers also found that disability and impairment progression decreased less in those given vitamin B7 compared to the placebo group.
“MD1003 treatment also reduced EDSS progression and improved clinical impression of change compared with placebo.”
It’s not a miracle cure – but this is a significant improvement for many people – and it seems to be free of side effects – something which can be said for other MS treatments.
The researchers found that high-dose biotin had sustained, long-term effects.
“Efficacy was maintained over follow-up, and the safety profile of MD1003 was similar to that of placebo.”
High-dose biotin is an interesting option that can be quite helpful for some people who are suffering from multiple Sclerosis.
High dose biotin reduces symptoms in some people and slows MS progression in many more.
“MD1003 achieves sustained reversal of MS-related disability in a subset of patients with progressive MS and is well tolerated.”
The supplement is pretty low risk, but there is one thing that people should be aware of. Higher doses of biotin interfere with many lab assays.
It can lead to false readings on thyroid labs and several other blood tests too. It doesn’t actually mess up the marker (like thyroid hormone) being tested but interferes with the test mechanism.
You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for medical diagnosis and treatment guidance.
