Does this really cause cancer?

There are a lot of different claims about the root causes of cancer.
The establishment has put forward a genetic idea of cancer…
…but many of us understand there is a big role for environmental factors like diet too.
The precise role of dietary factors in cancer risk is a hot topic of debate.
In the last decade, we’ve seen a lot of alternative sources claim that sugar causes cancer.
It’s now quite trendy for people to believe that high-fat, low carbohydrate diets are not only good for overall health but can help to prevent or cure cancer.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
A recent study showed that high-fat, low carbohydrate (keto) diets actually set up the stage for a number of “genetic” cancers.

The animal experiments were performed at Emory University in Atlanta. This paper was published in Cell Metabolism.
The researchers were looking into nondrug, nongenetic factors that might influence chances of surviving cancer.
“Lifestyle factors, including diet, play an important role in the survival of cancer patients.”
Cancer is something that happens at a very fundamental level, at the energetic and molecular scale.
There is still a lot of confusion about these mechanisms among many people in science and health fields.
“However, the molecular mechanisms underlying pathogenic links between diet and particular oncogenic mutations in human cancers remain unclear.”
These researchers were investigating a particular type of mutation which seems to increase the risk of many different types of cancers.
This cancer mutation is called BRAF V600E.
“We recently reported that the ketone body acetoacetate selectively enhances BRAF V600E mutant-dependent MEK1 activation in human cancers.”
This mutation plays a role in melanoma, leukemia, thyroid cancer, colorectal cancer, non-small cell lung cancer and ameloblastoma just to name a few.
The precise amount of influence this gene alone exerts on the risk of these cancers is debatable.
Previous research had shown that something called acetoacetate amplifies the carcinogenic effect of this mutation.
Acetoacetate is a ketone – something which is elevated when people go on very high-fat diets.
Acetoacetate is one of the primary markers of ketosis – it is a marker for many people chasing a high-fat lifestyle for health reasons.
“A high-fat ketogenic diet increases serum levels of acetoacetate.
In their animal experiments, the researchers found that the high-fat diet did indeed increase acetoacetate and this accelerated the growth of melanoma cells.
“This diet leads to enhanced tumor growth potential of BRAF V600E-expressing human melanoma cells in xenograft mice.”
Decreasing acetoacetate slows tumor growth.
Using a substance which blocks the effect of the acetoacetate also has an anti-cancer effect.
“Lowering circulating acetoacetate levels or an inhibiting acetoacetate with dehydroacetic acid attenuated BRAF V600E tumor growth.”
The high-fat “ketogenic” diet activates or amplifies the carcinogenic effect of this gene which is involved in numerous different types of cancers.
“These findings reveal a signaling basis underlying a pathogenic role of dietary fat in BRAF V600E-expressing melanoma.”
This type of diet was initially used to prevent otherwise intractable seizures.
There are a small number of other use cases for it.
But the idea that low carbohydrate, high-fat diets are good for general human health displays a basic misunderstanding of human physiology.
These high-fat, low carbohydrate diets may look good in the short term — but they cause complete derangement of the underlying human biochemistry.
This will lead to amplified metabolic problems in future and this can lead to cancer.
Diet, lifestyle and nutrition do play a huge role in the risk of chronic and sometimes life-threatening disease – but unfortunately many people have been led down the wrong path.
“The findings provide insights into the design of conceptualized “precision diets” that may prevent or delay tumor progression based on an individual’s specific oncogenic mutation profile.”
You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for guidance on medical diagnosis and treatment.
