Drink this for a younger brain and body
Caffeine is known as the energy giving element in coffee and energy drinks.
But properly dosed caffeine is also a very protective substance.
Caffeine helps the cells to produce more energy — which helps the body to maintain health.
A recently published study shows that caffeine can improve mental function and maintain brain matter as we age.
Even for people with type II diabetes.
This research was conducted by scientists in Israel and the United States. The results were published in the journals of Gerontology.
This study took information collected during The Israel Diabetes and Cognitive Decline study.
Scientists collected information over a 15 year period from hundreds of elderly people with type II diabetes.
Previous research had shown that animals with diabetes retained brain volume when given supplementary caffeine.
“Caffeines association with brain volume in type II diabetes has been tested only in animals.”
Loss of brain volume, particularly gray matter, is a strong indicator of decreasing brain vitality.
We want to protect gray matter and general brain volume as we age.
But gray matter and brain volume are only indicators of how the brain may perform.
The study also performed multiple tests of brain function (cognitive performance).
“We examined the association of caffeine with cognitive function and brain volume in a sample of elderly diabetics.”
Much of the information was taken from clinical assessments of the participants.
Caffeine intake was calculated from questionnaires.
Some of the people taking part in the study also participated in a magnetic resonance imaging scan.
This high-resolution brain scan allowed the scientists to calculate brain mass and gray matter volume.
“In a subsample with magnetic resonance imaging, we also examined these associations with gray and white matter volumes.”
Caffeine seems to be protective against the deterioration of mental functioning.
“Higher caffeine intake was associated with better function in overall cognition, attention/working memory and executive functioning.”
Brain scans revealed that caffeine protected gray matter volume in the brain.
“In the magnetic resonance imaging subsample, there was an interaction of caffeine intake with age for gray matter volume.”
Caffeine provided more protection in older people — according to most of the measures taken in this study.
“In the older group, higher caffeine intake was associated with greater gray matter volume.”
Caffeine could be protective against cognitive decline, even in people with type II diabetes.
“In the older group, higher caffeine intake was associated with greater gray matter volume.”
The authors believe that caffeine protects the gray matter of the brain.
And more gray matter may lead to improved mental performance.
“Greater grey matter volume may be a mechanism underlying the association of higher caffeine intake with better cognitive function.”
This is not the first time that a scientific study has shown the benefits of caffeine.
Caffeine can increase learning and focus.
Caffeine can help with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Caffeine protects the liver and can boost sex hormones.
Caffeine is found in beverages like tea and coffee.
For most people, coffee is probably the best way to get a caffeine boost.
Many chemical compounds in coffee are also protective of the brain and other organs.
This is why I think for most people, coffee is the best way to get caffeine.
It’s likely that a lot of the caffeine intake in this study was from coffee…
It’s also possible to get pure caffeine supplements.
Caffeine supplements work well but you have to be very careful when dosing caffeine.
A little too much caffeine can give someone serious anxiety.
An overdose of pure caffeine is possible and can be very dangerous.
However, it’s practically impossible to overdose caffeine by drinking coffee.
Though coffee can make people anxious at first.
A little food and some supplemental theanine can help with coffee jitters.
Theanine is a compound found in tea which goes very well with caffeine (or coffee).
If you’re not a coffee fan, consider matcha.
The naturally occurring theanine in matcha can give you the caffeine boost without the jitters.
You should always consult a healthcare professional about treating and diagnosing health problems.
