The dangerous food dye tearing up your insides

Inflammatory bowel diseases include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

These are extremely painful and life changing diseases which are notoriously difficult to treat.

The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease has been increasing for decades.

One analysis showed a 34% increase in inflammatory bowel disease between 2006 and 2016 – but it has been increasing long before that.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are caused by inflammatory factors which affect the gastrointestinal system – many of these are dietary and many are not even found in real food.

The animal experiments were performed at McMaster University, Hamilton, in Ontario Canada.

This paper was published in Nature Communications.

The authors of this study were investigating the potential role of a red food dye in colitis – inflammation of the colon which is characteristic of inflammatory bowel disease.

“Chemicals in food are widely used, leading to significant human exposure. AR is a highly common synthetic colorant but little is known about its impact on colitis.”

Allura Red AC, including FD&C Red 40 and has the E number E129.

It is widely used in drinks, juices, bakery, meat, and sweets products.

Already in 1980 there were 2000 tons of this dye produced annually with little thought given to human safety.

The researchers carried out animal experiments looking at the effect of this dye on inflammation of the colon.

Sure enough, this red dye does inflame the colon.

“Here, we show chronic exposure of AR at a dose found in commonly consumed dietary products exacerbates experimental models of colitis in mice.”

The researchers showed that the effects were dependent on a number of factors including dose.

Intermittent dosing was a problem but chronic dosing was a much more severe problem.

“While intermittent exposure is more akin to a typical human exposure, intermittent exposure to AR in mice for 12 weeks does not influence susceptibility to colitis.”

This dye set up the stage for lifelong inflammation of the colon when it was given to youngsters.

This means it might set kids up for inflammatory bowel disease.

“Exposure to AR during early life primes mice to heightened susceptibility to colitis.”

This food coloring increases serotonin – the primary inflammatory mediator in the gastrointestinal system.

Serotonin causes problems all throughout the body and is centrally involved in inflammatory bowel disease.

The additive also increases gastrointestinal permeability – gut leakiness – something known to play a major role in type II diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, depression and dementia.

“Also, chronic exposure to AR induces mild colitis, associated with elevated colonic serotonin levels and impairment of the epithelial barrier function.”

The researchers further confirmed the role of serotonin by giving this toxic food additive to mice that did not have the enzyme needed to produce gut serotonin.

Those rodents did not experience inflammation of the colon when given the dye.

“Chronic exposure to AR does not influence colitis susceptibility in mice lacking the rate limiting enzyme for serotonin biosynthesis.”

The researchers also discovered that the effect is independent of gut bacteria.

The additive caused serotonin-mediated inflammation in germ-free (GF) mice.

“Furthermore, chronic AR exposure elevates colonic serotonin levels in naïve GF mice.”

This substance is just one of dozens of food additives which have been in our processed food supply for decades.

Many of them cause gastrointestinal inflammation which is linked to a vast number of common chronic diseases.

“Our study reveals that chronic long-term exposure to a common synthetic colorant promotes experimental colitis via colonic serotonin in gut microbiota-dependent and -independent pathways in mice.”

You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for guidance on medical diagnosis and treatment.
