One food group slowly sabotaging your manhood

Fertility rates across the developed world are plummeting and have been for decades.

Male fertility is a good indicator of testicular and overall health.

Infertile men can’t just not have children – they are unhealthy.

At the same time as fertility rates are dropping in the developed world we have seen massive changes in diet.

One of the biggest dietary changes is the increase in polyunsaturated fats.

These fats – from “vegetable oils” and fish oils and lower metabolism, suppress the immune system, cause cancer and have major detrimental effects on the health of the testicles.

The animal research was carried out at the University of Porto. The paper was published in The American Journal of Physiology.

The authors of this study were doing research on childhood obesity in the lifelong effects that this seems to cause.

“Childhood obesity is a serious concern associated with ill health later in life.”

Major metabolic problems like obesity strongly correlate with reproductive and hormonal health.

“Emerging data suggest that obesity has long-term adverse effects upon male sexual and reproductive health, but few studies have addressed this issue.”

These researchers wondered whether the increasing amount of fat in the diet (which is associated with increasing obesity) could also be doing damage to the testicles.

“We hypothesized that exposure to a high-fat diet during early life alters testicular lipid content and metabolism, leading to permanent damage to sperm parameters.”

The researchers carried out their experiments on male mice.

“After weaning (day 21 after birth), 36 male mice were randomly divided into three groups and fed with a different diet regimen for 200 days.”

Some mice were fed a standard diet – others were fed a high-fat diet – others ate a high-fat and then later on switched to a lower fat diet.

“Mice were fed a standard chow diet , a high-fat diet, or a high-fat diet for 60 days, then replaced by standard chow.”

The researchers tracked weight, body measurements and other metabolic parameters during the research.

The animals were killed and examined later.

“Biometric and metabolic data were monitored. Animals were then euthanized, and tissues were collected.”

The researchers found that eating a high-fat diet causes fertility problems.

The testicles were damaged and even eating a high-fat diet for a little while had a detrimental effect on sperm.

“Our results show that mice fed with a high-fat diet, even if only until early adulthood, had lower sperm viability and motility.”

The sperms of mice fed a high-fat diet had head and tail defects – structural abnormalities which prevent sperm from fertilizing eggs.

“Mice fed a high fat-diet also had a higher incidence of head and tail defects.”

Changing diet to lower fat diet caused weight loss and helped with some of the metabolic problems.

But there was still a buildup of polyunsaturated fats in the testicles.

“Although diet reversion with weight loss during adulthood prevents the progression of metabolic syndrome, testicular content in fatty acids is irreversibly affected.”

The researchers discovered that the testicles were accumulating excessive amounts of omega-6 – an inflammatory polyunsaturated fat found in many vegetable oils.

“Excessive fat intake promoted an overaccumulation of proinflammatory omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the testis.”

The accumulation of this vegetable oil fat was clearly linked to fertility issues caused by the high-fat diet.

(Careful selection of dietary fats should eventually deplete these harmful fats from the testicles and the rest of the body.)

“The amount of omega-6 fatty acids in the testicles is strongly correlated with negative effects upon sperm quality.”

The study shows that diets high in vegetable oils can cause major problems for the testicles – even if these diets are only eaten for a short period of time.

“Therefore, the adoption of high-fat diets during early life correlates with irreversible changes in testicular lipid content and metabolism, which are related to permanent damage to sperm quality later in life.”

You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for guidance on medical diagnosis and treatment.
