Selenium: The Key to Improving Autoimmune Thyroiditis
This study was conducted at the Tianjin Institute of Hepatology. It was published in the International Journal of Endocrinology.
Selenium is a trace element that plays a crucial role in many vital functions in the body, including thyroid hormone metabolism and immune system function.
It’s also an antioxidant and a major factor in the production of reproductive hormones like testosterone.
In short, men need this mineral VERY MUCH.

In this study, the researchers wanted to understand the interaction between selenium and autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT).
“Many studies showed selenium supplementation could decrease thyroid autoantibodies in patients with AIT. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been well determined. Therefore, we performed a clinical study to investigate the possible mechanism of beneficial effects of selenium treatment on AIT patients.”
So, they recruited 32 patients with AIT and gave them 200mcg of selenium daily.
After 3 months, they measured the thyroid markers in their body.
The selenium group showed a significant reduction in antibody levels.
“After 3 months, TPOAb titer significantly decreased within group I (selenium) but did not change within group II (placebo).”
Also, selenium supplementation decreased lipid peroxidation (MDA) and increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD).
This is AWESOME because…
Lipid peroxidation is terrible for you because it creates oxidative stress.

“Additionally, decreased MDA levels and increased TAC and SOD activity were simultaneously observed after 3 months of selenium treatment. “
In short, selenium can heal autoimmune thyroid diseases because it has immense antioxidant properties (desperately needed in thyroid patients).
“Our findings support the hypothesis that selenium treatment could decrease TPOAb titer via enforcing the defense against oxidative stress in euthyroid patients with AIT, which may be a potential underlying mechanism.”
Good food sources of selenium include brazil nuts, shellfish, and red meat.
If supplementation is to be pursued, l-selenomethionine is the preferred form.
But don’t exceed 200mcg daily; it’s the upper limit for supplementation.
