This study was conducted at the University of California. It was published in Molecular Pharmaceutics.
Betaine hydrochloride, also known as betaine HCL, is a supplement used to increase stomach acid production.
It is typically taken as a pill or capsule and is available over the counter.
The HCL part of the supplement supplies hydrochloric acid to the stomach and helps with the breakdown of food.
This supplement also stimulates your own stomach acid production as well over time.

The researchers took a group of people and almost wiped out their stomach acid with a common PPI drug – the pH of the stomach rose above 5.
“Hypochlorhydria was induced via 20 mg oral rabeprazole twice daily for four days.”
Then they gave 1500mg betaine HCl and measured the gastric pH again.
Betaine did a great job of acidifying the stomach.
“After gastric pH > 4 was confirmed for 15 minutes, 1500 mg of betaine HCl was given orally with 90 mL of water, and gastric pH was continuously monitored for 2 hours. Betaine HCl significantly lowered gastric pH by 4.5 units from 5.2 to 0.6.”
And it did that in just six minutes.
“The onset of effect of betaine HCl was rapid, with a mean time to pH < 3 of 6.3 minutes.”
Their stomach remained acidic for about 70 minutes – plenty of time to digest the food.
“The re-acidification period was temporary with a gastric pH < 3 and < 4 lasting 73 and 77 minutes, respectively.”
No side effects were observed in the subjects.
“Betaine HCl was well tolerated by all subjects.”
Betaine HCl can be a godsend if you suffer from low acidity.
The use of betaine HCl can eliminate all the problems caused by low acidity.
As time passes, your body will start producing acid again, and you will no longer need it.
