Signs of LFJS
Low back pain is a common issue affecting people of all ages.
It is estimated that up to 84 percent of adults have experienced low back pain at some time in their lives.
Occasional lower back pain is completely normal.
But if it is chronic…
… it can render life unbearable.
Low back pain can have many causes.
However, recently, Lumbar Facet Joint Syndrome (LFJS) has been suggested to be the primary source of it.
There are joints in our lower back called facet joints that prevent friction between two bones.
This syndrome occurs when these joints become irritated and inflamed.
If any of your facet joints are damaged, you will feel pain when you twist in the direction of the damaged joint or bend backward.
You may also feel pain when you stand or sit still for some time.
This manifests itself as lower back pain.
And what is the solution to this?
Doctors generally recommend a few things, these are:
- cold and heat therapy
- exercise
- proper posture
Of course, these can work and should be attempted.
But there is another treatment you might be surprised to hear about, which is…
…methylene blue.
Methylene blue is a dye that has been used in laboratories for over a century.
It’s routinely used as a stain on blood cells, but it’s also been used to treat some illnesses like malaria.
Recently, doctors have started using methylene blue for other uses, including knee and hip surgery.
In a study on rats, researchers found that methylene blue can be safely injected into the spine to treat lower back pain caused by lumbar facet joint syndrome.
And other researchers who saw this said: “why don’t we try this on humans?”
That study is today’s topic.
This human study was conducted at Tongji University School of Medicine. It was published in Pain Physician.
The researchers recruited 104 eligible patients suffering from lower back pain.
They divided them into 2 groups.
One group received methylene blue injections, and the other received a placebo.
After this operation, the patients were followed up for 6 months and underwent various tests.
These tests included a pain test (NRS), a lumbar joint test (ODI), a sleep test (PSQI), and a depression test (PHQ-9), all of which have been used in scientific research for many years.
“Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to evaluate the pre-operation and post-operation states of the patients.”
The group that received methylene blue showed improvement in ALL of these tests compared to the control group.
“The NRS scores were significantly lower than that of the control group at 3 months and 6 months after the operation”.
The ODI, PSQI, and PHQ-9 scores of the MB group were also respectively significantly lower than that of the control group at 3 months and 6 months after the operation.”
So methylene blue was very effective for relieving low back pain in this study.
“As for the clinical efficacy, the total effective treatment rate of the MB group was significantly higher than that of the control group at 6 months after the procedure. “
The researchers also measured the safety of methylene blue and didn’t observe any adverse symptoms.
In fact, something unexpected happened – on the day of the operation, patients with diabetes experienced less hyperglycemia than the control group.
This means that methylene blue also benefits other body parts – which I have mentioned many times in my previous newsletters.
If you want to know how much I love Methylene Blue and its usefulness, you can take a look at them.
This strange dye may be more valuable than you think.
