This can help with chronic osteoarthritis pain

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It affects 10% of the population.

This painful condition causes inflammation of joints. This inflammation also destroys the joint tissue.

Treatments for osteoarthritis are very limited.

A new study shows that low level light therapy can significantly improve pain from osteoarthritis of the knee.

This randomised, placebo-controlled trial was published in the Journal of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.

60 participants between the ages of 40 and 80 years old were enrolled in the study. The participants were both male and female and all suffered from osteoarthritis of the knee.

The participants were split into three groups of 20…

One group performed osteoarthritis-specific exercises.

Another group had light therapy along with exercise.

Group 3 had a placebo light therapy along with exercise.

Light therapy consisted of a pulsed infrared laser, a red LED and an infrared LED.

These types of lights have been shown to reduce inflammation and pain in dozens of studies.

“The individuals were divided in the groups exercise alone, exercise + active phototherapy or exercise + placebo phototherapy.”

All of the groups had treatment twice a week for five weeks.

The doctors evaluated the participants’ osteoarthritis before and after the entire treatment schedule.

The study found that light therapy and exercise provided a much greater decrease in pain than exercise alone.

“Exercise + active phototherapy was significantly more effective than exercise alone and exercise + placebo phototherapy regard to the pain rating.”

The study used a questionnaire called the numeric pain rating scale to assess pain in the participants. This questionnaire has a rating system from 0 to 10 – higher scores indicate greater pain.

The combination of exercise and light therapy brought pain sensation down almost 3 points on average – on a scale of 0 to 10.

The scientists concluded that light therapy and exercise can reduce osteoarthritis pain.

“The combination of phototherapy and an exercise program is effective at reducing pain intensity among individuals with knee osteoarthritis.”

Dietary interventions, weight loss, and physical activity can provide improvements in osteoarthritis for some people.

But many people remain dependent on pain medication to deal with osteoarthritis.

Many of the medications that people use to treat osteoarthritis symptoms have risky side-effects in the long-term.

Light therapy could decrease pain and help people to lower the amount of medications that they use for osteoarthritis symptoms.

Not many people don’t know about light therapy — but it is very well backed by science.

Research into the effect of red and infrared light has been ongoing since the 1960s.

Much of the initial research into light therapy was conducted in Russia and Ukraine and has not been published in English journals.

Recent decades have seen a massive increase in interest in light therapy in the West.

There are now thousands of peer-reviewed low level light therapy studies in English.

Scientists discovered that red and near infrared light can improve the cells’ energetic metabolism.

By increasing the amount of work a cell can do, light therapy can help the body to repair many disease processes.

Appropriate dosing is absolutely critical in light therapy. The wrong wavelength, pulse frequency or power can limit any potential benefit.

These initial investigations into the effect of light therapy and osteoarthritis are unlikely to have used the best dosing metrics.

So it seems likely that future experiments could see even better results in osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis also commonly affects the hips, feet and the hands.

The inflammatory processes that cause the pain of knee osteoarthritis are the same as those which cause it in other parts of the body.

It is likely that light therapy could help with osteoarthritis in other joints.
