Now we can add something else to the list of ailments that coconut oil can treat.

A new study shows that topical coconut oil speeds wound healing and has an antioxidant effect.

These researchers conducted the study at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, India and published in the Iranian Journal of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

This animal study looked at the effect of coconut oil on excision wounds in young rats.

The scientists divided a bunch of rats into three groups of six.

They gave these rats excision wounds and then treated the wounds with either coconut oil or placebo.

The control group didn’t get any coconut oil.

The second group had .5 mL of virgin coconut oil applied to the wound.

And the third group had 1 mL of virgin coconut oil applied to the wound.

They applied the coconut oil 24 hours after inflicting the wounds and reapplied it every day for 10 days.

After 10 days, the researchers undertook a number of skin studies.

They looked at indicators of healing in the skin of the animals.

They also looked at the levels of antioxidants. (We need a good balance of antioxidants for complete healing.)

“After the experimental period, the healing property of virgin coconut oil was evaluated by monitoring the time taken for complete epithelialization.”

The epithelium is the outer level of the skin.

Complete epithelialization means that healing is complete, that the outer layer of skin has fully regrown.

[cmamad id=”20279″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]

The study found that the rats treated with virgin coconut oil healed much quicker than those in the control group.

“Virgin coconut oil treated wounds healed much faster, as indicated by a decreased time of complete epithelialization and higher levels of various skin components.”

The study showed an increase in healing collagen in the skin of the animals that were treated with virgin coconut oil.

“Pepsin-soluble collagen showed a significant increase in virgin coconut oil treated wounds, indicating a higher collagen cross-linking.”

The wounding led to damaged antioxidant capacity in the affected area.

Application of virgin coconut oil improved the antioxidant status – this may be partly why the animals healed quickly.

“Antioxidant activities were found to be increased on the 10th day after wounding, and were found to have returned to normal levels on day 14.”

Further analysis of the wound areas showed that virgin coconut oil accelerated the growth of structures that fuel skin repair.

“…an increase in fibroblast proliferation and neovascularization in coconut oil treated wounds compared to controls.”

The study shows that virgin coconut oil speeds recovery and skin wounds through a number of different mechanisms.

(I doubt that they have identified all the mechanisms in this study.)

“The beneficial effect of virgin coconut oil can be attributed to the cumulative effect of various minor components present in it.”

Maybe when virgin coconut oil is applied topically the PUFAs in that skin region are being swapped out for the saturated fats in the coconut oil.

So this may be one reason why topical coconut oil speeds wound healing.

Coconut oil also has some protective effect against opportunistic pathogens.

In a wound, our bodies must fight off these opportunistic pathogens.

Our bodies use valuable resources to fight off these pathogens – resources that our bodies could otherwise use to repair the wound.

At this point, the health claims made about coconut oil are so vast that they almost seem like a joke…

But, while some people overstate the beneficial effects of coconut oil, there is a ton of data showing a wide range of beneficial effects.

I think a little bit of coconut oil every day is a good idea.

You should always have any injuries assessed by a medical professional.
